I rarely get a chance to go into this store, as I only get to this area when I provide therapy for this particular client and I don't normally have extra time. I was hoping to find some religious figures to use in a vignette. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8LmD74sfZZQ/Uhn8n_NFFWI/AAAAAAAAAjk/3CadK7W4txw/s1600/IMG_5751.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8LmD74sfZZQ/Uhn8n_NFFWI/AAAAAAAAAjk/3CadK7W4txw/s400/IMG_5751.JPG" width="300" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fortunately for me, I found this unique Jewish Rabbi. He stands about 15 inches. He is somewhat muted in his appearance, it is not the quality of the picture. He is marked Austin Products on the back. I absolutely love him.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YczhLXdFCpg/Uhn-psBzG6I/AAAAAAAAAjw/I40dq2GEuiE/s1600/IMG_5750.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YczhLXdFCpg/Uhn-psBzG6I/AAAAAAAAAjw/I40dq2GEuiE/s400/IMG_5750.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I was very blessed to find another item to add to the vignette, this beautiful Madonna head vase. Her colors are stunning and her face is very dear.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8XWcdI0_zGA/Uhn_L-GYtMI/AAAAAAAAAj4/O3i1gC8sjaw/s1600/IMG_5753.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8XWcdI0_zGA/Uhn_L-GYtMI/AAAAAAAAAj4/O3i1gC8sjaw/s400/IMG_5753.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The brief trip into the Sally Ann thrift store netted two very nice finds. I was refreshed and joyful as I went to see my client. God is good.<br />
<br />
Here they are in the vignette. Sorry for the picture quality, the lighting in this area is not the best. By the way, the Smith-Corona manual typewriter was $2 at my local Goodwill Bargain Barn. Can't score better than that.<br />

<br />
Wow! Its been a long time since I posted, but I have a somewhat plausible excuse. I was offered a job in Florida the Monday before Thanksgiving and was asked to come ASAP. Well that meant getting on a plane, leaving all of our belongings and finding a place to live within one week from Monday. The least expensive flight was on Thanksgiving Day. My husband and I left earlier than normal for the airport, as that was only shuttle available at such a last minute.Fortunately for us we had plenty of time to waste, as the shuttle that we were on got a flat tire about a third of the way to the airport. We had to wait about an hour for a new shuttle to come and retrieve the passengers and all of the luggage. Many of the passengers missed their flight.Tempers were pretty high, as many of the passengers had loved ones waiting for them so that the family could partake in the traditional Thanksgiving meal. As for my husband and I, we had our Thanksgiving meal sans our two sons and their girlfriends, at the TGIF in the Atlanta airport. We arrived at our hotel in Cape Coral at 2:30 am, having landed in Tampa about 3 hours earlier.<br />
<br />
Our youngest son (turned 19 the Saturday after Thanksgiving) took care of our house and two Great Danes. My husband and I started looking for a place to rent in the Port Charlotte/Englewood area, as this was going to be my homebase for my new job. God is amazing, we found a home to rent and couldn't have asked for a better landlord and the company that I work for, is amazing as well. We ahd our car shipped right before Christmas. After the first of the year we had our youngest Great Dane shipped from the Seattle area to our home in Port Charlotte, Florida. The van driver took amazing care of our baby and he arrived safely after 6 days of travel, just ahead of the nasty, blizzard weather that seemed to blanket the midwest for most of the winter. This company specializes in transporting animals, which for us was a blessing, as it is NOT recommended shipping by airplane a large dog due to bloat. My husband went back to the Seattle area in February to get our house ready to sell.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2vt1KGOddAI/UdnJXxIDS5I/AAAAAAAAAik/JSxy9fBScw4/s1600/IMG_5474.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2vt1KGOddAI/UdnJXxIDS5I/AAAAAAAAAik/JSxy9fBScw4/s400/IMG_5474.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Our household items are still in Seattle and will not be shipped until our house sells. But for now I am content with my dog, car and the things that I am able to find here and there for a song and a prayer.<br />
<br />
Here is one project that I have been dreaming of for awhile. I found the birdcage at Goodwill for $4. I took the bottom off and tossed it. Then I spray painted the birdcage. The hardest part was finding a chandelier to fit inside the birdcage. This is not the exact chandelier, the one that I used had 3 lights and this one has 5, but other than that it is identical. I took the chandelier apart and then spray painted the light part the same color as the birdcage.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My husband hung the light on the front porch, saving the old nasty fixture so that we could put it back up when we are done renting the house.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Viola! Just what I imagined and more.....</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<br />
As I sit and ponder the devastation that has occurred in the last 24 hours to our Atlantic Coast friends, I am grateful that one day in the near future the power will be restored and lives can begin getting back to some sort of normalcy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WTIkBzaqBu4/UJAzCubwHXI/AAAAAAAAAfg/1ZB3XxRyeGk/s1600/019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WTIkBzaqBu4/UJAzCubwHXI/AAAAAAAAAfg/1ZB3XxRyeGk/s400/019.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It seems surreal (especially to me as I sit on the Pacific Coast and only have to worry about a little chilly gray rainy day) that so much damage can occur from one moment in time.<br />

(I share these photos from the beach, as they remind me of starting fresh after a disaster.)Shabby Gr8 Danehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12514243179228068799noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2486992105790325581.post-76532075933431010562012-10-19T15:30:00.004-07:002012-10-22T13:34:25.126-07:00Beach Cottage Decor Bottle UpcycleI am a lucky gal, as my husband saved a Blue Sapphire Gin bottle for me thinking that I might be able to put it to good use and he was right. My heart was a patter, as I knew that this color would be just right for a beach cottage look.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6h5M2TFerRI/UIHLi_fCBxI/AAAAAAAAAc0/cGEBzoNcbfY/s1600/bombay-sapphire.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6h5M2TFerRI/UIHLi_fCBxI/AAAAAAAAAc0/cGEBzoNcbfY/s400/bombay-sapphire.jpg" width="291" /></a></div>
I soaked the bottle, scraped with a scraper and finally used Goo Gone to remove the sticky label, removed the cap and used wire cutters to remove the ring that kept the cap sealed prior to opening the bottle. Unfortunately, the side of the bottles has raised print formed into the glass, but it is small and not obtrusive.<br />

I stopped at a gift shop that carries beach souvenirs and purchased a few bleached starfish in different sizes to add to my craft supplies. One of the starfish would be just right for this project. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RMPHC7YPA5Y/UIHPR_SOKNI/AAAAAAAAAdc/uRP9lBAj94I/s1600/016.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RMPHC7YPA5Y/UIHPR_SOKNI/AAAAAAAAAdc/uRP9lBAj94I/s400/016.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Sand was added to the bottle for a beachy look. I fit the bottle with a cork, gouged out a cavity to fit an arm of the starfish, hot-glued the arm in place and wrapped the neck of the bottle and top of the cork in small bridal trim pearls, hot-gluing done as I wrapped.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tu_5s0aoQr0/UIHQXUHZ2fI/AAAAAAAAAds/ysbMFTJljLA/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pvh4DkHNisQ/UIHQZKz352I/AAAAAAAAAeE/6ukQvSBAkW0/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pvh4DkHNisQ/UIHQZKz352I/AAAAAAAAAeE/6ukQvSBAkW0/s320/005.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
An easy peazy project. I also made one with bling; don't have a picture on that one but just imagine vintage clear rhinestone chain in place of the pearl trim. It was beautiful and sold immediately after placing in my shop. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CcfujHdUcVU/UIHQX9iwfHI/AAAAAAAAAd0/hudXtNx_iw4/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CcfujHdUcVU/UIHQX9iwfHI/AAAAAAAAAd0/hudXtNx_iw4/s320/003.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
You can see the raised print in the glass in the picture above. Luckily, only on two sides, so it does not distract from the essence of the bottle.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nOrJPnoE6UA/UIWttxgtv_I/AAAAAAAAAfE/j6jMc5V704U/s1600/006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nOrJPnoE6UA/UIWttxgtv_I/AAAAAAAAAfE/j6jMc5V704U/s400/006.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Enjoy and try this, you won't be disappointed!<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DRXo_tZga54/UHxXf1EN2YI/AAAAAAAAAbs/uU770VHzSyA/s1600/2012-10-15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DRXo_tZga54/UHxXf1EN2YI/AAAAAAAAAbs/uU770VHzSyA/s400/2012-10-15.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I purchased the tutorial and set out to make a pair using materials that I had in my stockpile. I wanted the wings slightly larger, so I used my copier to enlarge the wings, but since I only had 8.5 X 11 inch paper, I had to be creative. I got a one side of the wing larger on the paper (the other wing was somewhat missing, as were the tips of both wings). So I cut good wing out and flipped it over on a clean sheet of copy paper and traced it. Cut the traced wing out and taped the two together to make a pair of wings. Voila!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yivZ76DN-Y4/UHxXHj_JA4I/AAAAAAAAAbk/MMJZrtS3pwA/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yivZ76DN-Y4/UHxXHj_JA4I/AAAAAAAAAbk/MMJZrtS3pwA/s400/001.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I am a sports fanatic and made this pair of wings during a football game that I was watching on television. Oh, yeah, the Seattle Seahawks won at the last minute. A great come from behind win. And on top of it I had a romantic pair of angel wings!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pF_JYRU8jKs/UHxYXzQtj5I/AAAAAAAAAb0/8GfU0Tu-ThM/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pF_JYRU8jKs/UHxYXzQtj5I/AAAAAAAAAb0/8GfU0Tu-ThM/s400/003.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I used curly/crinkled seam binding that I created myself. When I am out thrifting, I look for unopened packages of 100% rayon seam binding (also called seam tape). Make sure that it is 100% percent rayon and not the new packages of 100% polyester. These packages come in 3 yard lengths and I can usually pick them up for under 25 cents. I take take ribbon out of the package, spritz it with water to get it wet, scrunch it up and them place it in the corner of a plastic bag. Take the bag, wad it tight by twisting the bag right above the ribbon and tie it off with a piece of twine or twisty. Let it sit overnight and then take out of the bag. Loosen the wad slightly and let it sit on the counter to dry out. Turning and loosely wadding back up every couple of hours. Easy curly/crinkled seam ribbon for a very reasonable price.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eZVrSXqnASk/UHxaB3NdGdI/AAAAAAAAAb8/Ie0dATENlg4/s1600/004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eZVrSXqnASk/UHxaB3NdGdI/AAAAAAAAAb8/Ie0dATENlg4/s400/004.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Because the rayon seam binding is vintage, sometimes the seam binding has an odor. Many times you don't notice the odor until you are spritzing the ribbon. If this occurs I take the ribbon and soak it in Oxyclean for a few hours, rinse well and wad it up and put it in the plastic bag.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eEsgkLAyeJA/UHxfugHk3SI/AAAAAAAAAcY/GnIo2yHCMO0/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eEsgkLAyeJA/UHxfugHk3SI/AAAAAAAAAcY/GnIo2yHCMO0/s400/005.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The bling is an vintage earring, cut off the clip and hot glued to the middle of the crinkled ribbon bow.<br />
<br />

I know that the commandment says not to covet thy neighbor. (Good thing I am not in Mr Swem's math class or he just might whack that ruler over my knuckles for not behaving like a proper lady!) Aren't we glad that our children don't go to school in the early 70's.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-46TLLyxM8nk/UFUmL8HeV3I/AAAAAAAAAYw/D_Q8S_jinBY/s1600/027.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-46TLLyxM8nk/UFUmL8HeV3I/AAAAAAAAAYw/D_Q8S_jinBY/s640/027.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I decided that I would go to a couple of garage sales after I was done providing therapy. On the way to the garage sales, I drove by our local St. Vincent DePaul and the reader board said 1/2 off housewares, hardware and furniture. Oh boy, must stop. Found a few things - ironstone coffee pot, brass colored metal finial, ormolu cherub lipstick holder, carte posta wall hanging, metal floral picture frame and wire pedestal basket with braided jute trim.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pzZd_AG_owM/UFUmm3vJm5I/AAAAAAAAAY4/U6J2EMoe15A/s1600/025.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="500" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pzZd_AG_owM/UFUmm3vJm5I/AAAAAAAAAY4/U6J2EMoe15A/s640/025.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then on to the two garage sales. First one, nothing. The second one, well what can I say...... my heart was aflutter. A Royal glass keyed working typewriter with its own tweed case, <br />
<br />

<br />
a small glass cloche and gray, brown and tan decor balls with a Frenchie type design, just perfect for the jute topped wire pedestal bowl that I found an hour earlier at St. Vincent DePaul.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Oh boy! did I score today or what? I can no longer be envious, because today I was blessed. In addition, I actually think that this display makes a nice vignette, double score. All purchased for less than fifty dollars.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
I picked up this slim cabinet at a neighborhood's annual garage sale. The adult son was staying with his mom recovering from surgery and accidentally bumped into the cabinet with his wheelchair. The faux stained glass broke, the better for me, as I am always on the hunt for a piece to doll it up with chicken wire.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As you can see by this picture, someone cut out a piece on the backboard, so off came that piece. Not an easy task and to boot I got a couple of slivers, OUCH! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

Viola! A French cabinet. I am planning on replacing the backboard, but I was in too big a hurry to post the change!<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QUVc3VqE_sE/UEUW0fo1CII/AAAAAAAAAVE/QeiRRkhI1DY/s1600/demilune5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="168" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QUVc3VqE_sE/UEUW0fo1CII/AAAAAAAAAVE/QeiRRkhI1DY/s400/demilune5.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I found this lonely beat up dining room table at a thrift store and knew exactly what it needed to be a well-loved center of attention treasure. Sorry, I forgot to take a picture of the table before my friend's husband cut it just as I wanted, shaking his head the entire time because he could not wrap his head around my vision.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JiUxm4_mo2E/UEUZQjqxCwI/AAAAAAAAAVM/urRSz8JiaLc/s1600/demilune6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="178" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JiUxm4_mo2E/UEUZQjqxCwI/AAAAAAAAAVM/urRSz8JiaLc/s400/demilune6.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
When he was done I had two ends (as well as four legs, not seen in pictures) like the one above and would create two demilune tables, one for my enjoyment and one to add to my <a href="http://www.shabbygr8dane.com/" target="_blank">web store</a>. Boy was I excited to get started. I chose French Linen and Paris Gray Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. I used Amaco Rub-n-Buff in Gold Leaf for the indented trim on the table skirt and legs; I finished this table a couple of months ago before Annie Sloan gilding wax became available.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8N1MhznQ964/UEUaJxzqtlI/AAAAAAAAAVU/wPJ7tcNW60w/s1600/demilune1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8N1MhznQ964/UEUaJxzqtlI/AAAAAAAAAVU/wPJ7tcNW60w/s400/demilune1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I love the way that French Linen, used on the table top, and Paris Gray, used on the legs and table skirt compliment each other. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GSpKdKpKeBc/UEUbN9nRcvI/AAAAAAAAAWE/pOZ6wvcTS2s/s1600/demilune3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GSpKdKpKeBc/UEUbN9nRcvI/AAAAAAAAAWE/pOZ6wvcTS2s/s400/demilune3.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
The gilding wax puts an icing on the cake so to speak.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sTdxKLJxVTI/UEUdz3myZLI/AAAAAAAAAW0/C1LgeApmQCE/s1600/demilune7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="307" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sTdxKLJxVTI/UEUdz3myZLI/AAAAAAAAAW0/C1LgeApmQCE/s400/demilune7.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I had a hard time taking pictures of the full table, as the only drawback on this table is that it does not have a supporting leg, so the table back will need to be attached to a wall using "L" brackets. Therefore, my overgrown boxwoods serve as the table support wall. Here is another picture with not so great lighting, as it makes the table top look bluish gray.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-66Kp0XM2Xiw/UD-E4Ykp1mI/AAAAAAAAAUw/rOBijEUuj7o/s1600/apllecollage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-66Kp0XM2Xiw/UD-E4Ykp1mI/AAAAAAAAAUw/rOBijEUuj7o/s400/apllecollage.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I was inspired by LittleMissMagggie's blog post regarding French script <a href="http://littlemissmaggie1.blogspot.com/2012/05/french-script-pears.html" target="_blank">pears</a>, so I decided to create my own French script fruit. I found a small wooden basket and a few glittered paper mache apples at the thrift store. I downloaded a few French scripts from The Graphic Fairy and copied them onto tissue paper, as outlined on LittleMissMaggie's blog.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5H6jnhW2yj0/UD-BkFyy4FI/AAAAAAAAAUQ/DJKSwoyrrBM/s1600/018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5H6jnhW2yj0/UD-BkFyy4FI/AAAAAAAAAUQ/DJKSwoyrrBM/s400/018.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
First, I painted the apples white, as they were a gaudy gold color. Then, I decoupaged the graphic around the apple, cutting the sides of the graphic to help it lay flat against the apples. I took a marker and colored the stems black.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Gec3rQ1otUM/UD-Cgn_Ts9I/AAAAAAAAAUY/R_9yYnmYU3o/s1600/017.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Gec3rQ1otUM/UD-Cgn_Ts9I/AAAAAAAAAUY/R_9yYnmYU3o/s400/017.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Next, I painted the small wooden basket with Provence Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and added some raffia to cushion the apples.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3HQmYFKcnIA/UD-DqkWOwVI/AAAAAAAAAUg/JScLfHjMlZA/s1600/015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="252" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3HQmYFKcnIA/UD-DqkWOwVI/AAAAAAAAAUg/JScLfHjMlZA/s400/015.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Lastly, I glued an apple label that I found on the web.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7NZtgMuzeUo/UD-EHlixyFI/AAAAAAAAAUo/khVeN1R16WQ/s1600/014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7NZtgMuzeUo/UD-EHlixyFI/AAAAAAAAAUo/khVeN1R16WQ/s400/014.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A very simple project that provides a decorating focal point for pennies on the dollar.<br />

I had fun creating a charming clear glass perfume bottle, utilizing a copy vintage Witch Hazel label. The label is adorned with violets with the background color being cream. So I decided to incorporate cream flowers (a millinery flower and a hand-rolled muslin flower), a spray of purple violets, tulle, crinkled ribbon, rhinestone chain, pearls. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
What do you do when you have an oops project? The pieces, one of which is above and was intended to cover a seat cushion for a dining room chair that I was re-purposing, to this project sat around for awhile because I hate to throw things away. The picture does not really show the oops, but it is there. The original printed paper that I was burnishing onto the fabric shifted and when I was finished with the burnishing there was a shadow on some of the letters and the cluster of grapes was very blurry. The appliqued insert did not have enough room for a seam (it was originally meant to be in the middle piece of a slipcover for an ottoman), which is what I needed for the project that it was created for. So after sitting for a couple of months, I finally came up with a plan. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TnEzCenpDZQ/T9bjXFdagbI/AAAAAAAAAQA/HmJsUQgnenQ/s1600/004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">
Put the two oops projects together to make a throw pillow. I covered the above oops (osnaburg fabric) by appliqueing the other oops (unbleached muslin) over the top. Looking great at this point with one exception - the appliqued fabric piece did not quite cover the oops on the bottom fabric. So to the rescue sweet rolled unbleached muslin and tea dyed muslin rosettes.</div>

with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics and it was my mom's 45 birthday. My family lived in Edmonds, Washington; a five hour drive from Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. I had moved back home the week earlier, as my finals were all done. My mom, younger sister, aunt, my best friend and myself (my dad would be watching from heaven, having passed away almost 5 years earlier) drove from Edmonds to Corvallis; leaving bright and early to get to Corvallis a couple of hours before the start of the ceremonies.<br />

so that I could change clothes and get ready for the ceremony only to discover that I had left the tickets at my mom's house! Panic started to set in. Each graduate had been given 4 tickets. Fortunately, one of my sorority sisters heard of my plight and offered two of her tickets that she was not using.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Thank you, Jesus! We decided that my mom and sister would be the lucky ticket holders and we would go over to the auditorium (the basketball arena at Oregon State University) and see if we could garner two more tickets. After having no luck we happened upon an unguarded open door. I am not one to do something wrong purposely,but hey what the heck, I had tickets for my family, just left them at home. My aunt and best friend snuck in through the open door and found my mom and sister. If the start of this special time wasn't stressful enough, towards the beginning of the graduation a middle age woman made her way to the stage and got up to the microphone, as the president of the college was speaking and spoke into the microphone and told everyone to leave the building, as there was a bomb about to go off in the building. Holy cow, everyone froze not sure what to do. Now remember this was 30 years ago, some 19 years before 9-11. Had this happened anytime in the last 10 years everyone probably would have been running out of and away from the building as quickly as humanly possible. The arena was in slow motion, everyone not sure what to do. It seems like an eternity, but it probably was only about a minute or so later and one of the school officials came forward and told everyone to go back to their seats, as a family member of the middle aged woman had come forward and told the officials that she had mental health issues and that there was no bomb. I am just thankful that in 1982 we lived in an era where in the United States where this was all surreal. Had it been in the last few years, I am sure that I would have been very stressful,the graduation ceremony would have either been postponed or canceled and the arena would have for sure been evacuated immediately. Truly a memorable day engrained in my memory forever.Shabby Gr8 Danehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12514243179228068799noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2486992105790325581.post-1854027656879358792012-03-12T10:24:00.005-07:002012-03-14T10:06:34.159-07:00French Script Dining Room ChairWent into the local thrift store this past Friday and found 5 dining room chairs for a fine price. However, one of them will need to have some tender loving care, as it was a chewing toy for a puppy or maybe a grown gr8 dane like mine, that never seem to outgrow chewing something. Oh yeah, it is leather that they never seem to outgrow chewing. I hate to think about how many shoes I have lost and how many cowboy boots my husband has lost. The joy of living with gr8 danes! Surely can't be a materialistic person, cause they will get to your most idolized thing first! However, once a gr8 dane invades your life, you are a gr8 dane host for the rest of your life.<br />
<br />
Oh, that is right I started this post about the dining room chairs that I came upon. Here is a picture of a chair prior to it's transformation.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7kI1r1-D_r4/T14z11QGMnI/AAAAAAAAALw/8PPIaWsHEck/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7kI1r1-D_r4/T14z11QGMnI/AAAAAAAAALw/8PPIaWsHEck/s320/003.JPG" width="180" /></a></div><br />
I took the chair apart, ripped off the upholstery and started work using one of my newest colors of chalk paint (Pure White) that my dear husband bought for my birthday last week. He bought me four colors, a new can of clear wax and a wax brush! I told him all that I wanted for my birthday was chalk paint and he listened big time!<br />
<br />
Added some new padding, as the chair padding was a mess. The upholstery fabric is a print that I found at one of my local fabric stores. Then I happened to come across the same fabric at fabric.com that very same night looking for something else and it was half the price including free shipping for purchases over $35. Thank goodness I only purchased a half yard. Goes to show that you really have to be careful on your whim purchases!<br />
<br />
Here is the final product, sans waxing. <br />

The table is not quite done in these pictures, as I want to wax using a dark wax. I am very nervous about this step and that is why I haven't set out to finish the table. In the heated excited to get started on this table, I so totally forgot to take a before picture. Visualize in your mind a sad, dark, drab little table with its finish wasting away and adorned with cigarette burns on its top.<br />

This sweet French table is done in ASCP Paris Grey and Old White. The gold trim is AMOCO Rub 'N Buff Antique Gold. I painted the drawer pulls with the Rub 'N Buff Antique Gold cut with a drop, and I mean drop because it becomes very runny and messy if you add any more than a drop, of turpentine. The handles took two coats of the mixture. Once the Rub 'N Buff was dry, I buffed both the trim and the drawer pulls.<br />
<br />
Check back later for an update on the waxing. I am waiting to take it to my ASCP stockist to have her encourage me through my fear. When it is done I will be adding it to my Etsy store.<br />

I saw the potential in my mind and wanted to play around with a few new colors of chalk paint.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Es65CUYepW4/T1REQMWwxrI/AAAAAAAAAKY/X4wkitM1dh8/s1600/018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Es65CUYepW4/T1REQMWwxrI/AAAAAAAAAKY/X4wkitM1dh8/s320/018.JPG" width="180" /></a></div>The table started out a gaudy metallic bronze color. Not my style! I slapped on some Annie Sloan Paris Grey paint and decided that it needed some accenting. I decided to layer the outside of the octagons with Annie Sloan Old White. So I taped up the edges with blue painter's tape and painted away. Looking better.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Zc1_yo6uAAk/T1RFaQyZMDI/AAAAAAAAAKg/SQhtUfpWlk8/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="177" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Zc1_yo6uAAk/T1RFaQyZMDI/AAAAAAAAAKg/SQhtUfpWlk8/s320/008.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I have been intrigued with AMCO Rub 'N Buff and decided to add French script and a filigree border around the script using silver Rub 'N Buff. So I pulled out a Martha Stewart stencil for the border and an Elmer's Metallic Paint Pen (I would normally use a Sharpie, but could not find a water base paint pen, only an oil base paint pen. The oil base can not be used on the Chalk Paint, so I have been told. The Elmer's worked just fine. Tada ~<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eRfZlwZhw-M/T1RIWJQeh1I/AAAAAAAAAKw/svnOku2PKZY/s1600/015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="173" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eRfZlwZhw-M/T1RIWJQeh1I/AAAAAAAAAKw/svnOku2PKZY/s320/015.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
For the finish, I slightly distressed the table and put a clear wax coat over the paint. This table is for sale in my Etsy shop.<br />

I wanted to see if the homemade chalk paint that I had been using could be topped. This whole repurposing thingy is new to me and I wanted to make sure that it was not just a blip in my already busy schedule. I am totally hooked and don't see it coming to an end any time soon, as a matter of fact I found a new job for my wonderful husband who is about to retire. He is getting into the action too, although he is not too sure about this distressing thingy. Just wait I will sway him to my side soon! The side effect of having a very special relationship after all these years, a lot of work but we are both reaping the benefits of it.<br />
<br />
I bought this table for $4.00 at one of my favorite thrift stores. It was full of missing chunks of wood on the edges, looks like someone loved to vacuum rather quickly. I sanded down the sides to make the table useful.Here is the table after the paint, gold leaf wax and paste wax job. Sorry, I forgot to take pictures of the table prior to the excitement of trying my new paint.<br />

I really love the gold leaf wax on the upper edge of the table. Gives the table a very "French" look. I have to say that I am in love with this paint and I probably will not go back to my homemade paint, even though it worked great, as well. I used less than 1/4 of the Annie Sloan quart, even with two coats. It distresses really easily, my homemade paint did not.<br />
<br />
I loved this paint so much that I went back to the store the following day and bought two more quarts (different colors, of course). This store is not close - about an hour and a quarter drive. If you are hesitating to try this paint because of the price - sell one of your masterpieces with the goal in mind of using the proceeds to try Annie Sloan chalk paint. I believe that you will not be disappointed!<br />

</div><div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Table prior to makeover (side view above and view from front below). As you can see, dark and drab! Surely not something I would have in my house. It is however, a solid piece of maple furniture. Couldn't pass it up, as the store had priced it at $4.00. Even if my project was a complete failure, I did not have much to lose.</div><div style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-k-q-ZhPQymU/TzyywaWPkhI/AAAAAAAAAIU/5en0Q2PmUlY/s1600/010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-k-q-ZhPQymU/TzyywaWPkhI/AAAAAAAAAIU/5en0Q2PmUlY/s320/010.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I wanted to try my hand at repurposing furniture. This is my first attempt. I spent many hours trying to figure out what I was going to do and how to do it. I love shabby chic and wanted to create that look. I happened across chalkpaint and even a recipe for chalkpaint using powdered calcium carbonate. Spent an afternoon going from one health food store to another, you have to understand that I live in a pretty rural area, so I traveled quite some distance just to get to one store, let alone three other stores. Fortunately two stores were in close proximity of each other and then the last two stores were also in close proximity to each other. Came up short in all four places. Just happened to go to Walgreens as I was leaving the second town to go home, defeated. I happened to pass Tums and stopped dead in my track with a light going off in my brain. Tums is calcium ..... I wonder what other ingredients are in Tums. Can you believe - it was calcium carbonate. Oh my goodness! Now I was in a quandry, as I needed powder and also Tums are flavored and colored. My mind went into high gear and I decided to buy the peppermint Tums, as they were white. I thought that I could put the Tums in a plastic bag and smash with a hammer to create a powder. A few minutes later I thought about my Cuisinart food processor, after all it could probably powder the Tums in no time!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Viola! The final product. Two coats of homemade chalkpaint and a freezer paper French label (thanks to Graphics Fairy, LLC) transfer burnished on the bottom tier. Does not even look like the same table,my husband doesn't believe me that the before picture is the same table. Not bad for a first project and an unbelievable cost of under $10.00.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

My dear 18 yo niece passed away on February 5. She suffered a fatal asthma attack. Her life was short and oh so hard. The last time I saw her she was lovingly doting on and caring for her dying grandma, as we all sat together in the hospice house where my mom spent her last week of life. You see, my mom and aunt were the primary caretakers for my niece and her brother becuase their mom and dad were struggling with their own mental health issues. They were in the picture, but had a difficult time parenting full-time.<br />
<br />
I know that Emily is in a better place, back with her grandma that she so greatly loved, with her maternal grandfather that she never met, as he died from cancer 16 years prior to her birth and her paternal grandfather that passed away when she was a toddler.<br />
<br />
It is never easy when a young person passes before they have a chance to enjoy their adult years. However, she was a child of innonence and struggled after her grandmother passed. Highly intelligent, she was bored by school and flunked because she refused to turn in her homework, though she would pass her tests with percents in the high 90's or even 100. She asked me one day why it was so important to turn in homework, if she could pass the test without studying. And with that I could only answer that it was about the rules, because logically she was right.<br />

Fly, fly away with the angels sweet, Emily!Shabby Gr8 Danehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12514243179228068799noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2486992105790325581.post-66167014936784233222011-12-18T22:33:00.000-08:002011-12-18T22:40:47.466-08:00Open and Off to the Races<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--9XA8_2XI64/Tu7bV_lnBJI/AAAAAAAAAB0/VsHz22vuhlg/s1600/042.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="278" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--9XA8_2XI64/Tu7bV_lnBJI/AAAAAAAAAB0/VsHz22vuhlg/s320/042.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
The first month of business on Etsy has been nothing short of exhilarating. Our move to Florida may have been moved up by 6 months, as an almost perfect (perfect job, not quite as far south as we wanted in Florida) job opportunity has been presented. I am on overload as I post this due to the reality that I may be moving cross country by myself without my family until they are able to relocate sometime next fall. Sit down with your favorite cup of tea and scone and come in to our Eclectic Boutique filled with the scents of love and joy. Make sure to visit often, as we add new additions daily. Never worn Sarah Coventry jewlery, Hummels, vintage clothing, china teacups and saucers, as well as other eclectic junque.Shabby Gr8 Danehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12514243179228068799noreply@blogger.com0
